From 1984–1994 Subaru manufactured the Justy itself; since then it has sold a rebadged version of other vehicles under the Justy nameplate. The company introduced the latest iteration, a rebadged Daihatsu Sirion (2nd generation), at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show[1] with a 1 litre straight-3 engine, front wheel drive, and 5-speed manual gearbox. Originally designed and manufactured in Japan, the Justy was introduced to Japan in 1984. United States and United Kingdom versions followed in 1987 and all models received a restyling in 1989. In the United States, only the Japanese manufactured models were sold and only from 1987 to 1994. The Justy received 4WD in 1988, and all models were equipped with Multi Port Fuel Injection late in 1992. The Subaru Justy was the last carbureted car sold in the United Kingdom, as well as the United States[citation needed]. A four-door model was also available from 1991 to 1994. Manufactured in Suzuki's Hungarian plant, these were available in 3 and 5 door models with available four wheel drive. In 2004, a rebadged Suzuki Ignis carried the G3X Justy nameplate in Europe. In MY 2007 a rebadged Toyota Passo/Daihatsu Boon revived the Justy nameplate with the Toyota 1KR-FE 1.0 L engine. [edit] Subaru models carrying other nameplates In some countries the Justy was sold under the name Subaru Trendy or just as the 'J-series', J10 for 1.0L versions and J12 for 1.2L versions. In Taiwan, Subaru marketed a version of the Justy with a sedan-style body and an uprated 80 bhp (60 kW) fuel injected EF12 engine called the Tutto. The CVT technology (a pushbelt system) was employed because with a conventional automatic transmission, performance would have been unacceptable, due to the small 3-cylinder engine. In North America, because of the long distances, the CVT was considered unreliable, but this has not been the case in other countries. In 1989, the gear ratios changed, front brakes and outer axle shafts were made larger, the rear differential was reinforced and front axle shafts were identical lengths. The European Justy from 1994–2001, a rebadged second generation Suzuki Cultus, used a 1.3 SOHC 8V, G13BA Suzuki engine with a Suzuki 5 speed manual transmission and available 4WD. The 1990 model was the last car sold in the United States with a carburetor; the following year the Justy had fuel injection. Some early 1992 USA models still had the carbureted engine. Auto Express Car Reviews By Otis ClayJune 2008 When you’re growing up, everyone asks you what you want to be when you’re older – and I never had any desire to be a fireman or train driver. My ambition was to become an animator. I loved ‘anime’ (the popular Japanese art form), and quickly found myself taking an interest in Eastern imagery and culture. This dream came to an end at the age of about 15, when I discovered skateboards, football and all the other things that occupy a teenage boy’s time.However, I still have a love of all things Oriental, so I was chuffed to be handed the keys to the new long-term Subaru Justy when it arrived at the Auto Express offices. As junior staff photographer, I rack up lots of miles, and need to carry loads of kit, so I’m excited to find out how the little Japanese city car copes with the strain. First impressions are good. Commuting into our central London office is a breeze, as the Justy’s compact size is well suited to city driving. I think it looks good, too. It’s based on the Daihatsu Sirion, and the flat bodysides and chunky arches give it a distinctive appearance. Smart alloys also provide a bit of flair, and the Subaru badge projects the kind of sporty image missing from the Daihatsu. Worries I had over storage were also dispelled quickly. Much like the first time I tried sushi, I was pleasantly surprised! There’s room for all my camera gear, even though the boot has a capacity of only 225 litres. The simple dash design is in tune with the exterior styling, and it comes well equipped – the standard air-conditioning has been very welcome during the recent warm weather. So far I’ve been impressed with the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. On motorways you have to plan overtaking manoeuvres well in advance so you don’t lose momentum. And you’re always aware of how hard the car is working thanks to the constant – and tiring – noise from under the bonnet. But it’s also full of character and perfect for city driving. Rear parking sensors add to the appeal in town.The Justy is the only two-wheel-drive model Subaru produces, and is a million miles from the rally bred Impreza. But the handling is tidy enough. And what really impresses is the fuel economy: the Justy has averaged 44mpg. That’s saving me a fortune in train fares, and a few longer trips should see the figure improve. It’s superbly built, and so far, after only 1,169 miles, I can’t fault it. So it’s a great start for the baby Scooby. The engine provides nippy performance in town and the cabin quality is good, too. What’s more, there are loads of useful storage cubbyholes for things like CDs. I also like the little Subaru’s styling – those standard-fit alloy wheels are very smart. Sitting in the car there's a real sense of airiness thanks to the almost excessive amount of headroom supplied by the boxy shape. Rear seat passengers are spoiled as the clever design means there's plenty of legroom available making the Justy one of the most comfortable superminis around.The speedometer and rev counter are a little in your face which is slightly at odds with the spacious feel of the rest of the car. But the centre console makes up for it thanks to a stylish and effective design featuring chunky controls that can be easily seen and used.Getting into and out of the Justy is simplicity itself - thanks to the perfect seat height. The driving position is comfortable with good visibility offered by the large windows.The boot isn't enormous but it is a practical shape and the rear seats split and fold downwards in one simple movement to leave a flat loadbay for more awkwardly shaped items.Subaru ensures there's plenty of kit included to keep you entertained in the two versions of the Justy on the market.Both the 'R' model I drove and the 'Twin Cam' are fitted with remote central locking, four electric windows, air conditioning, radio/CD player with auxiliary input socket, air conditioning, alloy wheels, fuel-economy read-out, and parking sensors.The Twin Cam model is jazzed up with tinted rear glass, spoiler, sports exhaust, an alloy gearknob and white stripes for the bonnet and sides.There are also plenty of safety features with electronic brakeforce distribution, side and curtain airbags and ISOFIX child seat mountings coming as standard. An alarm coupled with remote central locking handle the car's security.If the Justy reminds you of another vehicle then you're probably thinking of the Daihatsu Sirion on which it is based. As well as the tall dimensions they share the three-cylinder one-litre engine that offers excellent fuel economy and very low carbon dioxide emissions.The low running costs coupled with the Justy's five-year warranty and an annual road fund licence of just £35 help make this Subaru exceptionally easy on the wallet.It's also easy on the body as the ride and the seats are comfortable and it's relaxing to drive. The light steering and tight turning circle make it a friend in the urban jungle as parking and manoeuvring are anything but a chore.It's not so good on faster roads and corners as levels of grip are moderate and the tall stance means it does lean a bit when going round bends.
