New Subaru SVX for sale

Subaru SVX - 37,500 miles only
.
| I’m sure if you’re reading this you either know all about the Subaru SVX or saw the picture and are thinking what on earth is that? I can’t believe...>
I’m selling my pride and joy, but I no longer have a garage and I can’t bear to see this magnificent car sitting out on the road – so I’m very sad that it has to go. | But I’m not going to give it away. You will have seen Subaru SVXs for less than £2k and even some for around a grand – but they’ve all done over 100,000 and are tired and tatty to say the least. This has only done 37,500 miles and has had only 3 owners including me. I bought the car in April 2000 from a gentleman who had owned it since it was six months old – he covered less than 100 miles in that time (none from 1995-2000) - it sat alongside a Jaguar E-type and a Bugatti in his garage! He knew his cars. The car was originally owned by a member or Dick Lovett’s family. | I won’t bore you with all of the car’s details, but there is a good overall account if you follow this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Alcyone_SVX. | Very briefly, it is a 4 wheel drive 3.3 litre flat six cylinder luxury grand tourer coupe designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro with every possible convenience (for 1992) – electric everything and full black leather and alcantara `suede` – and was produced by Subaru to show the world that they could produce something more than farm vehicles! | Sadly, they didn’t sell and it was discontinued in 1997. They were around £30,000 in the UK – not much less than a Jaguar XJS – which it beat along with an Audi S2, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX and Honda Legend in Autocar’s August 1992 Road Test. | The cars were made in very small numbers and of the 24,500 or so made in total, only about 200 were imported direct by Subaru into the UK – so this is an ultra rare car. | The best bits: | I have spent around £6,500 during my 12 years of ownership – most has been servicing including cam shaft drive belts. However I have had a new gearbox fitted (many SVXs had gearboxes that failed as mine did). It was replaced F.O.C. by Subaru but I had to pay for the labour of £490. I have had a stainless steel exhaust hand made and fitted (£634) – I have the original. I have a Covercraft custom fit soft indoor cover (£220). There is an Alpine radio/CD player fitted (£285) – I have the original. 4x Toyo Proxes T1-R 225/50 R16W tires (£370) were fitted at about 22,500 miles – there’s tons of tread left. I had a painted US market radiator intake surround fitted to replace the clear plastic UK version. I re-registered the car with an SVX plate, it’s J, single number, SVX - J#SVX – the plates shown are black show plates – I have a white and yellow set. The leather is pretty much unmarked apart from the issue listed below. The engine compartment is very tidy. The spare wheel, jack and tools have never been used. | The car drives beautifully and is a rock solid cruiser – I’ve had some great holidays abroad and a steady 120 is absolutely no problem. Everything works 100%. I had the exhaust note made a bit more throaty than normal when the stainless steel exhaust was custom made. | The things you should know about before you make the journey (I want to be 100% up-front and honest): | All of the wheels would benefit from sand blasting and repainting – the paint is flaking in parts. The front bumper has a 10cm x 1cm scratch on the offside corner, one about 1cm on the nearside corner and one 1cm just above the plate (selfish useless parking b******* after I had no garage) – see pictures. The nearside door has two tiny dents (not broken the skin nor rusty) – see picture – one 6 inches to left of handle and the other 6 inches below to the right.Below the same door there are some scuffs on the paint below the footplate. The offside rear quarter has an almost imperceptible 4 inch crease above the joint between the two panels (not broken the surface). The passenger seat has a tear in the leather which was repaired before my ownership (see picture).Tiny spot of rust (about 3mm) is above the nearside side indicator light – I really cannot see any more on the car – picture.Few stone chips on bonnet and front air intake. The radio cover flap does not close over the new radio case (it has a removable fascia)!Rear bumper has a few very tiny scratches. All of that said, you can see from the main pictures that, apart from the wheels, the car looks mint. | So all in all that might sound like a lot to look at, but I want you to know everything in advance – and I know that if you spend a few hundred pounds on this car you will have amongst the very, very best around. Even if you don`t spend anything - it really is a very special head-turning car. Go anywhere that people appreciate cars and park alongside Porsches and a Ferraris and I guarantee that this car will be the one that everyone comes to look at and talks about. | I really can’t believe I’m doing this but there you go. | Do call or email if I can tell you any more, | Cheers, | Peter | X

It was Fuji Heavy Industries first attempt to enter the luxury/performance car market. Its intention was to combine two seemingly contradictory elements – comfort and performance. The name Alcyone (pronounced "el-SIGH-uh-nee") [ 1 ] refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades star cluster, on which the Subaru logo is based. Contents 1 History and sales 2 Body 3 Drivetrain 4 Performance 5 Motorsports 6 References 7 External links [ edit ] History and sales JDM Alcyone with BBS wheels The Subaru SVX first made its debut at the 28th Tokyo Auto Show in 1989, as a concept car. Italian Automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign designed the slippery, sleek bodywork, incorporating design themes from many of his design concepts, such as the Ford Maya and the Oldsmobile Inca. Subaru decided to put the concept vehicle into production and retain its most distinguishing design element, the unconventional window-within-a-window. Subaru called this an "aircraft-inspired glass-to-glass canopy," which was borrowed from the previous model Subaru XT with an additional extension of glass covering the "A" pillar . The decision to release this car for production would give the public the first opportunity to drive a "concept car" as originally conceived. Subaru introduced the SVX in the United States in July 1991 (as a 1992 model), following up the U.S. debut with a Japanese market introduction in September of that same year. The model was designed and marketed as the replacement for their aging, envelope pushing Alcyone XT and Alcyone XT6 coupes. Outside Japan, the Alcyone designation was dropped, and the car was marketed as the Subaru SVX. The 1992 Subaru Legacy was given a facelift that strongly resembles the SVX, introducing a visual similarity between Subaru's top level vehicles. Color choices on the Legacy also mirrored those offered on the SVX also. The introduction of the SVX followed the 1990 introduction of the Honda NSX , as it appeared that Subaru was following Honda's lead introducing new products not normally associated with Honda and Subaru in the past. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price ( MSRP ) for the base model 1992 SVX-LS was $24,445, with the top of the line model with touring package, the LS-L, listing at $28,000. This was $8,000-$11,000 higher than any previous Subaru. By the end of its production run in 1996, the price had risen to $36,740 for the top-of-the-line LSi (called the Version L in Japan). In Japan, the SVX was the first Subaru to exceed government size regulations in the vehicle's width category that determine yearly tax liability based on exterior dimensions and engine displacement. The models offered in Japan were the L and the S4. As a result, in Japan the SVX was considered a luxury vehicle and was equipped appropriately with one-touch climate control, leather interior, front seats that were both electrically adjustable and heated, a single disc CD player coupled with an AM/FM stereo sourced from Panasonic that was hidden behind a retractable panel, and a remote controlled keyless entry with security system. The luxury approach followed the introduction of the Subaru Legacy four years earlier. Because of its high price, and the fact that it had made its U.S debut during an economic recession, sales in the United States were sluggish; 5,280 cars were sold in 1992 and 3,859 cars in 1993; it was reported that Subaru intended to sell 10,000 SVXs each year. Demand for the SVX dropped significantly before falling to just 640 units in 1997, at which point Subaru discontinued production. Total sales of the SVX numbered 14,257 in the United States and a total of about 25,000 worldwide. 2,478 SVXs were sold in Europe (with 854 headed directly to Germany and 60 to France). Roughly 7,000 of all SVXs sold were right-hand drive models. Included in this number were the 249 vehicles sold in Australia, at a cost between approx. Au$73,000 to Au$83,000. As an investment, Subaru actually lost $3,000 on every Subaru SVX sold, for a total loss of around $75,000,000 on this project. However, they considered this a small price to pay for the increased awareness of Subaru's presence as a quality, forward-thinking auto manufacturer. The SVX continues to be prized as a used car with unusual styling. Most examples can been seen in good condition, though one 1994 SVX in Seattle was put up for sale after being damaged in a televised police chase. [ 2 ] The car was called a "future collectible" in Collectible Automobile magazine with strong, but not very high resale values. [ 3 ] [ edit ] Body Alcyone SVX Hood Emblem In stark contrast to the boxy, angular XT, the SVX had curvy lines designed by Giugiaro and an unusual, aircraft-inspired "glass-to-glass canopy" with 2-piece power side windows. The windows are split about 2/3 of the way from the bottom, with the division being parallel to the upper curve of the door frame. These half-windows are generally seen on exotic vehicles with "scissor" , "gull-wing" , or "butterfly" doors, such as the Lamborghini Countach , De Lorean DMC-12 , and the McLaren F1 . The SVXs aerodynamic shape allowed it to maintain the low drag coefficient of .29 cd, previously established by the XT coupe it replaced. Subaru Alcyone SVX Rear View [ edit ] Drivetrain EG33, quad cam, 24 valve engine Unlike the previous model, which had been available with either a turbocharged 4-cylinder (as XT) or a naturally-aspirated 6-cylinder (as XT6), the SVX debuted with and remained available with only one engine, the EG33 model 3.3 liter "BOXER" horizontally opposed Flat-6 or H-6 . For 10 years after SVX production had ceased, this engine held the record as the largest engine ever produced by Subaru for its passenger cars, until the introduction of the EZ36 3.6L Boxer engine in the 2008 Subaru Tribeca . Internally, the engine is essentially a six-cylinder variant of the EJ22 found in the first-generation Legacy and Impreza . The new 3.3 liter variant was equipped with dual overhead camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder, and had an increased compression ratio of 10.1:1, bringing horsepower up to 230 bhp (172 kW; 233 PS) at 5,400 rpm with 228 lb·ft (309 N·m) of torque at 4400 rpm. Fuel delivery was accomplished with sequential Multi-port fuel injection with dual spray injectors. Engine ignition used platinum spark plugs and a computerized management system with "Limp Home feature", which included over-rev protection, monitors fuel injection and ignition. The exhaust system consisted of head pipes from each bank of cylinders with their own pre-catalytic converters, which entered a dual-inlet / single outlet main catalytic converter. A single 2.5" exhaust pipe exited the main converter and went into a resonator, and onto the main, transverse, single inlet muffler with twin exhaust tips in the bumper. All versions of the SVX sold were equipped with automatic transmissions. Depending on the country, Subaru had two versions of their All-Wheel-Drive system for the automatic transmission, called ACT-4 or VTD. The first system, called ACT-4 (Active Torque Split) by Subaru, was the same setup commonly found on other Subaru models of the period, and used a variable clutch pack center differential using a 90% / 10% power split front to rear, which could transfer up to a 50% / 50% power split for maximum traction if the front wheels started to slip, allowing better fuel economy. This AWD system was offered throughout the entire production run, and was used in vehicles manufactured for sale in the USA, Canada, Germany, France and Switzerland. A sportier continuous traction delivery system, called VTD (Variable Torque Distribution) by Subaru, was used in vehicles for sale in Japan, the UK, the Benelux region of Northern Europe, Australia, Spain, Austria and Brazil. The VTD AWD system is a permanent AWD due to its 36% / 64% split. [ 4 ] The Japanese-spec SVX was equipped with four-wheel steering (4WS). Subaru began to realize that the high selling price of the SVX was giving some buyers "sticker shock". In an attempt to attract more buyers, a Front Wheel Drive FWD version was offered on the SVX during the 1994-1995 model year, which cost about $1500.00 less than the AWD version. In 1994, FWD was offered on both the L model (X33 in the VIN) and on the LS model (X34 in the VIN). In 1995, only the L model was offered in FWD (X33 in the 5th, 6th and 7th digits of the VIN). Buyers avoided the compromised FWD version and weak sales figures led to its discontinuation after 1995. [ edit ] Performance Much of the early development, technical, engineering and performance data was taken from a special 100 page publication "Road and Track's Guide to the New Subaru SVX" [ 5 ] and "Modern Classics: Subaru SVX" by Canadian Driver. [ 6 ] Acceleration from 0-60 mph was 7.3 seconds, with a standing 1/4 mile time of 15.4 seconds at 92.5 mph (148.9 km/h). The top speed of the 1992/1993 SVX was 154 mph (248 km/h) [ 6 ] with later years capable of 143 mph (230 km/h) [ 6 ] due to the addition of an electronic governor. The SVX was relatively heavy, weighing in at 3,580 pounds (1,620 kg), which is roughly the same as a third generation Outback wagon . It was only available with the 4EAT 4-speed automatic transmission. A manual transmission, capable of handling the horsepower and torque of the EG33 engine, was not available at the time of production and was never made available as an option. [ edit ] Motorsports In 1991, a Subaru SVX, driven by Ken Knight and Bob Dart, won the Alcan Winter Rally, [ 7 ] a race starting in Seattle to the Arctic Circle and back. In the early 1990s there was a Subaru SVX PPG Pace Car. [ 8 ] It featured a silver to purple fade paint job, silver wheels in the front, purple wheels in the rear, "SVX" windshield banner, roll cage and an amber roof light. It was evaluated by Wally Dallenbach Sr, Indy Car Chief Steward and PPG Pace Car evaluator. It was used as a promotional tool for Subaru, as well as a pace car. While most pace cars were retired after one season, the SVX proved to be such a worthy example and a favorite, it was used for several seasons. It now is in storage in the famous "Subaru Performance Attic" in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, near Subaru of America's headquarters. This is where many of the unique Subaru concept cars and Subarus of historical significance are stored. [ 9 ] [ edit ] References ^ "Merriam-Webster Pronunciation" . The prototype was designed by renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign. Subaru produced around 25,000 SVXs from 1992 through 1997 (about 14,000 of these were imported to the United States). The most striking feature of the car is the windows. The window design of the SVX was created with the goal of good aerodynamics, unobstructed visibility, and a distinctive appearance. The car sold for between $28,000 and $35,000. I own a 1994 LS and I've never had a car that's been more fun. It gets looks from people where ever I go and the reactions are great. If you can imagine a face that says "what the hell is that??!" then you know the expressions I see every day as I drive around town. My SVX has almost caused three accidents in the past two years from drivers looking at my car and not the road. It's like having an affordable exotic car. On the downside...because of its rarity, parts are relatively expensive. And every car has its own set of predictable problems. The SVX has three main faults: transmission failure, wheel bearing failure, and warped rotors. The rotor problems are caused by the sheer weight of the SVX--3,600 pounds. Subaru had never made such a heavy car and did not equip them with rotors to match. The transmission and wheel bearings fail prematurely but corrections can be made to extend their life. These and other issues are addressed in the FAQ section of this website. I only point out its flaws because if you're planning on buying a Subaru SVX, you should be aware of its good and bad points. If you know the potential problems going in, then you won't be surprised if they come up. But don't let the problems scare you away. The SVX is a great car that one magazine called "a cross between Porsche engineering and Jaguar refinement." Whats so odd about the SVX? How long have you got? Rather than follow any defined automotive genres, the SVX blazed a trail of its own. Unfortunately, this trail ended up in something of a box canyon, but for a few years the SVX was probably one of the most outlandish cars you could buy, a show car that somehow escaped onto the road. Tracking down a decent used example isnt going to be the work of moments, but should you find one, you can guarantee nobody else in your street will have one. Whether thats good or bad depends on your personal perspective Although it casts a fair sized footprint on the road, space inside the Subaru SVX is limited to 2+2 seating at best. The 3.3-litre 24-vlave flat six engine drives all four wheels in the finest Subaru tradition and is at once the cars heart and finest asset and also its biggest liability for the used purchaser. Its an incredibly complex engine featuring IRIS, Subarus variable intake system and four overhead cams operating four valves per cylinder. A single toothed cam belt drives both exhaust cams with intake cam drive coming from helical gears located on the exhaust cams themselves. Its almost as if Subarus engineers set about showing off what they could do, in much the same way that Mariah Carey never chooses one note when fifteen will suffice. Following two years after the successful Legacy Quad Cam Turbo model, the SVX is a far more singular proposition. Based on a design by Giugiaro, its signature styling feature is a striking glasshouse with unusual windows within windows at each side. Subaru claimed these allowed the windows to be lowered without wind buffeting at speeds of up to 75mph, but seeing as the SVX was fitted with air conditioning there seemed little point. The SVX was sold through just 20 UK dealers and was superbly finished. The dash still harked from the days when Japanese cars hadnt quite cracked the art of making plastic look classy, but the rest of the cabin is well finished in leather and alcantara with dramatic looking sports seats that were surprisingly comfortable. With the front seats run back on their runners, rear legroom disappears and headroom isnt overly generous but much of this can be excused by the sheer feeling of airiness inside. Its certainly wide enough in there and youll get a decent sized boot. Wed point at that the equipment list was the best in class at the time, but trying to define what that class was can provoke lengthy discussion. Suffice to say, the SVX came with electrically adjustable drivers seat, electric sunroof, cruise control, central locking and a six speaker stereo system. Post April 93 cars featured the two omissions from the standard kit list a drivers airbag and an electronic plipper. You can pick up a 1993 K plated SVX from as little as £2,000 with the airbagged early 1994 cars being sold for around £3,500. Youll never need to fork out more than £6,000 for the last of the 1996 N-registered examples. Insurance is a steep Group 18, just one of a series of big bills the SVX has a knack of attracting. With such a dizzying level of technical complexity, you can rest assured that should the VSX throw a major wobbler youre going to end up footing a big bill. Fortunately, its a Subaru, a company that tops the JD Power customer satisfaction charts with monotonous regularity and which has got reliability down to a fine art. Nevertheless you should inspect all of the electronic equipment to make sure its functioning, as reports that the electric sunroof has been known to lapse into a coma have been accompanied by stories of big bills to fix it. The air conditioning system isnt the most robust either, so make sure its working effectively. With four wheel drive being operated by an active torque split system, an electronically controlled intelligent four speed automatic gearbox and that 3.3-litre boxer engine, the Subaru SVX isnt a car that will be relished by your local handy spanner man. As such, its best to invest in a specialist inspection. Its money well spent. You tell us. Subaru couldnt supply spares prices which may tell you all you need to know about obtaining accessories fro the SVX. The SVX is no ball of fire but neither does it hang around. Think performance and handling broadly equivalent to a four-litre Jaguar XJ-S with added roadholding and you wont be too far wide of the mark. The power output of 226bhp rarely overwhelms the traction of the four 16-inch Michelin original fit tyres although its enough to propel the1614kg SVX to sixty in 8.7 seconds on the way to 144mph, figures which compare favourably with modern cars such as the Peugeot 406 Coupe V6. The flat six engine has a distinctive metallic twang at high speed which is rather pleasant but tyre noise is less welcome. Driven hard, youll see an average of just over 21mpg which isnt too clever, although the gearbox can be set into an economy mode. Driven in this fashion, the SVX upshifts early and you could see the figure croak up to a still rather underwhelming 22.7mpg. It does have a 70-litre fuel tank which translates into a meaningful range of around 350 miles. The ride will probably be firmer than youd at first expect, but the corollary is superb handling, the four-wheel drive system gluing the car to the road with some tenacity. The suspension setup is probably the one part of the car thats utterly conventional, yet the cars composure in even the bumpiest of corners is nigh on faultless. Has such a great car ever been such a sales turkey? When Autocar tested this car upon launch, they rated it above the Audi S2, the Honda Legend Coupe, the Jaguar XJS 4.0, the Mitsubishi 3000GT and the Nissan 300ZX. Thats some achievement and one few would have seen coming. As a used buy, it fares less well. Yes, it is reliable, and the lack of image and mechanical complexity have driven residual values through the floor. It also means that unless you genuinely know what youre doing, a car like the Nissan with a bigger dealer support network and easier spares availability is a more sensible bet. If youre prepared to make a few sacrifices in the name of exclusivity, a Subaru SVX could be just the ticket. Are you feeling lucky? Well, are you?
